How we started..  

Barbarik Industries® was created in 2006 when I suffered a dehabilitating back injury. Always into exploring the great outdoors - caving, abseiling, hiking, climbing and an extensive training regime among other things - I was forced to endure over 4 months of being bed ridden, and many more months of disablity from my normal functions and day to day activities - something that I am still in the process of overcoming even today. Depressed with my inability to get out and do the things I loved and enjoyed - in particular my training - I looked everywhere for motivation and inspiration, something to focus on and to get me through the pain and depression. I found it by remembering something my old training partner used to shout at me when I was thinking of giving up halfway through a set of weights. When the burn in my muscles used to feel like it was on fire, and I was set in my belief that i couldnt lift another rep - he used to shout " pain is weakness leaving the body!" and I would somehow always manage to push out a few more reps where i thought before I would surely fail. Why was this? I remember hearing those words, and focusing on them so intensly and what they ment, my mind cleared as to what was required of me and my body just simply followed. Focus. Its amazing what you can do when you truely focus on something. 

So I took an old shirt and went down to my garage where my gym equipment was and wrote " Pain is weakness leaving the body" accross the front of the shirt.

That was my first attempt at a workout in over 6 months, and it hurt, alot. But each time I thought that it would be easier to give in and go lay back in the bed - I saw what was written on the shirt reflected in the mirror and I focused - and kept going. Each day I was able to push on that little bit more, to focus that little bit harder on getting back to what I had lost, and I did it because of some words written on my shirt that had meaning and gave me something to focus on. I began looking around and thinking up other things to inspire me to keep pushing past the point where I would give up and putting those motivational quotes on my shirts. I remeber going on an ice climbing trip down at the snowfields. The weather was terrible, it was a storm, I was ill prepared and my legs were killing. I looked around for somewhere to have a rest out of the wind and snow and after that I didnt feel like getting up again, I just felt like laying there and going to sleep.

I lay there thinking and got to thinking about the shirt I was wearing - I had written " choose the most grueling path" on it before I left for the trip. I thought about it and what that ment to me - I did want to be challanged, and I did want to make it through where other people would have given up, and I wanted it just for my own satisfaction, to know that I could do it. I thought about it, I focused on it, and I got up - and after that I didnt lay down again until I had reached my goal. Words can be a very powerful thing, especially when they project the image of something you want and spark your imagination that it is possible to do.

After that I had some shirts made up with various quotes on them that I wore to the gym and on other adventures I undertook. People came up to me and asked where they could get those shirts from - and thats how we started and have been growing ever since.

I have tried to design the brand, its logo, quotes and designs to encompass the adventurous spirit that resides in us all somewhere - the want of being the biggest, the fastest and the strongest - to be the person that everyone wants to be, to be fearless in your pursuits and rise up and conquer every challange you face.
